Explosion at Nürburgring Injures 22

Paddock Area Affected by Blast

Six-Car Crash Also Impacts Race Start

NÜRBURGRING, Germany (AP) - A compressed air bottle explosion in the paddock area of the Nürburgring race track in western Germany injured 22 people Friday, officials said.

The blast occurred shortly before the start of the Nürburgring Endurance Series race, which was delayed for more than an hour. Witnesses said they heard a loud bang and saw smoke rising from the paddock area.

"It was a very loud explosion," said one witness, who declined to be identified. "I saw people running and screaming."

The injured were taken to local hospitals, where they were being treated for various injuries, including burns and lacerations. None of the injuries were life-threatening.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation. However, officials said that a compressed air bottle used to inflate tires was likely involved.

The Nürburgring is one of the most famous race tracks in the world. It hosts a variety of racing events, including the Formula 1 German Grand Prix.
