DWP Raises Universal Credit, PIP and Other Benefits by 10.2%
Increase in line with inflation, follows September's 1.6% rise
Payments to rise from April 2023, impacting millions of people
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced an increase in Universal Credit, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), and Pension payments by 10.2%. This rise, in line with inflation, follows the 1.6% increase in September 2022.
The increase will take effect from April 2023, with payments expected to increase by an average of £693 per year. The change comes as the cost of living continues to rise, with inflation reaching a 40-year high.
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said the increase would "support the most vulnerable in society," while Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride said the government was "fully committed to supporting those most in need." However, charities and campaigners have called for further action to address the cost of living crisis, which is disproportionately affecting low-income households.
